Additive/Subtractive

This is the famous picture of Bobby Orr scoring the Stanley Cup winning goal in 1970 for the Boston Bruins and is quintessential to Boston sports history. In a lot of photos taken of famous sports events, the focal point is the player who made ‘the big play.’ I find it interesting to look at the outside points of the picture as you can see a lot of different emotions in the opposing team, the crowd, etc. The biggest challenge in my subtraction was having to essentially guess at what the defenseman’s (in white) pants looked like on his back leg. I decided to use a darker shade of his foreground leg as this would generate a more realistic, 3D look.

  1. i can imagine who hard it is to do subtractive art with black and white pictures, i really like how you restored the defenseman’s pants. A small flaw i found was the area in the crowd that blocked by Bobby’s shoes were empty after you removed him from the picture. maybe you could do something about it?

  2. I really like the concept of this piece. Taking Bobby Orr out really changes the whole feeling of the piece since the defenseman seems to direct his look towards his teammate instead of towards Orr’s celebration. I would be really interested hearing how you came around to picking this particular moment and not one like the 2011 Stanley Cup victory or the lack of Babe Ruth in the 1921 Red Sox lineup.
