Final Project: The day we stopped dreaming…

I recently stumbled upon these beautiful videos about the future of the NASA and its relevance for the future of technology and humanity. They are narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

 

 

I want to make these videos interactive, using 3 different controllers:

Numark Mixtrack Pro (MIDI Controller):

This board will be used at certain points in the movie to trigger the video, by turning up knobs or spinning wheels in order to emulate the various controls and technology that is needed for our space endeavors.

Arduino Board

I will try to make a physical countdown going, using LED’s.

This will also be my training for Monday’s class.

MakeyMakey

The video talks about being bold and make the NASA’s budget 1 Penny of every tax-dollar. I want to trigger a part at the end by closing a circuit using a penny.

0:33 – NASA got funded: Fund NASA (put money on weight sensor)

Step1_WSD

 

1:01 – Reverse Rocket (Arduino touch Sensor)

STEP2_WSD

1:20 – Finish the drawing to close the circuit (Draw technology of the future!)

STEP3_WSD

2:02 – Disconnect your future drawing and discard it. Turn back all midi knobs

STEP4_WSD

2:50 –Distribute the money better! Move money from bank bailouts, tax waste, and defense budget onto  technology. (Pass certain threshold in order to  advance)

STEP5_WSD

3:40 – Be bold! Make NASA’s budget a penny! (Place a penny on the designated spot to play the video!)

STEP6_WSD

3:51 – Start the rocket! Turn all the knobs up, wait for the countdown and slide on the slider to start into the future!

STEP7_WSD

How to make it happen: A Step-by-Step Plan:

  1. Make the Arduino Countdown (due Monday!)
  2. Cut the original video at the specific points specified. Make sure the sound is alright.
  3. Generate all content needed for the in between explanations (PNGs, Animations etc.)
  4. Connect all necessary devices
  5. Map input
  6. Make Patcher

All in all this is quite an ambitious project considering the amount of content and patching that needs to be done. However, I believe I can pull it off!

 

Update – Wednesday – 3:40 AM

I got done with most of the patching. I can now control the videoplayback via all the different inputs I mentioned in my sketches. It cost me an immense amount of time and nerves and I almost had 3 breakdowns.

The last step that is between me and my sweet, sweet break is the video overlays. I decided to go with simple text overlays and leave it up to the user what to do in each situation, or, at least not to go ham on animations in the overlay.

The reasons behind this simplification are as follows:

  1. Animations will not add to the value of the project, but rather make the user look dumb (explain everything…)
  2. The extra time is not feasible.
  3. I am fed up with this Project beyond measurement at this point. If I would not fail a class, I would not have been able to pull this final off. Also, I cannot hear the video anymore at this point.

Oh and no arduino. Not gonna happen. I am terrible at ECE, glad I did not choose that major. Plus it does not add any value, apart from two blinking Led’s (…duh).

I make use of three different input interfaces, Makey Makey, MIDI and Smartphone. That will more than suffice.

Interactive Projection

Even tough my video does not look like much, this has actually been a crazy intensive project.

I am obsessed with the idea of interactive t-shirts. Just imagine one could wear video’s, games and so on. Or share things you care about by being a living billboard for your cause.

So I wanted to motion track and then project something on my shirt. I chose to use the live footage as that adds another meta layer.

I managed to do this, and I am personally happy with the result. I found motion tracking extremely glitchy and hard to work with, however the turn-out is pretty great.

As for presenting in class, it is quite a setup. We would need to head to the Digital Arts Studio and I would have to set up for a couple of minutes. Therefore, I am frankly not sure wether or not I’ll be able to show live what I did. To give you an idea however, I made this youtube video. Enjoy 🙂

 

 

Edit1: I’ll eventually map my MIDI mixtrack to videoinput so one can choose the projection. However, this has been an immense time commitment already, so  we’ll see about it.

POKEMON (Interactive Animation Assignment)

Idea

The idea behind my project was my passion for Pokemon and the idea of the usage of alternative game controllers.

I wanted to rebuild PokeBalls. That was the first idea. However, I quickly found myself struggling with the idea. So instead I 3D Printed three Pokemon I found on Thingiverse. (Low-Poly Pokemon by FLOWALISTIK)

I drew a graphite Pokeball and attached it to the MakeyMakey board as the ground. I attached aluminium foil to make the prints conductive.

The animations were recorded using the VirtualBoy emulator and a program called TinyTake. I had quite a few issues throughout the cutting and rendering and actually decided, due to logic issues, to lower the number to two pokemon (namely Charmander and Chikorita).

As soon as I finished the animations, I worked on the patcher. After hours and hours I managed to come up wiith the following:

Essentially, I play a start animation, then a “Go animation”, depending on the chosen Pokemon.

Welcome People to my first blog post.

 

The GeometricShapes assignment is now TIMED.

I analyzed the beat (I had Serato analyze it for me, to be precise) and calculated the beats per millisecond.

Now a random effect will occur on every other beat. The effects are random, every time one gets a different result.

The song is called “Deja Vu” and can be found on “(R)evia” by Tua (tuamusik.de)

The Interactive animation took a lot out of me. I still have not figured out how to make it just appear when clicking without looping it.

So I figured I’d just put soundeffects on it and let it go. Not my best work, honestly.
